*Campbell street runs parallel with O'Connell Terrace alongside the Brisbane City Showgrounds and runs from the Royal Brisbane Womens Hospital (RBH) in Herston through to the News Corp offices in Bowen Hills.  

Campbell street is split by the rail line leaving only O'Connell Terrace intact.  At the RBH end it curves seamlessly into Sneyd street and onto O'Connell.  At the News Corp end it's a one-way slip road leading into Tufton street and likewise back onto O'Connell.

Because we live busy -often hectic- lives it can be difficult to organise a face-to-face meeting, find time for a meaningful phone conversation, or even connect online electronically.

 

To this end you can text or e-mail me (which is how most people make contact) and I'll reply to e-mails and text enquiries by 9:30am the following morning - schedule permitting.  

If you've tried calling me and I haven't answered you may have received the following message;

Additional Considerations

  • Developing a healthy state of mind takes time, energy, and commitment, in the same manner as self-care, diet, exercise, education, and career progression.  Therefor you may have an ongoing scheduled commitment with me.  In keeping with the understanding that unexpected life interruptions can occur I aim to accomodate change where clients schedules vary week-to-week.


 

  • In keeping with client Confidentiality and duty of care, in cases where my calendar does not reflect my booked appointments or current obligations, no reason or discussion may be offered.  This means that on very rare occasions appointments may be postponed or rescheduled without explanation.  In such rare and unlikely circumstance notice will be given.


 

  • For services listed under Communications Training where a formal ongoing agreement has been made for twice weekly recurring sessions there is less flexibility regarding rescheduling

  • You will be required to make a deposit to receive certain services such as the Cigarette Free Consultation.  Where this is appropriate you will be notified.  Your deposit will be forfeit upon cancelation or if you require rescheduling more than once.  You will be made aware of the Terms of Service in advance of the agreement and e-mailed a copy of the Terms of Service at time of payment.

Whtwo Hours?

Traditionally psychologist, psychiatrist, therapists, and counsellors will spend what is termed the 'therapeutic hour' with you in therapy.  That length of time refers to the 45 to 55 minutes of in-session face-to-face therapy that you receive.  

I believe that a solid hour and a half is the minimum amount of time needed to get anything useful done in therapy.  Because of this I set my sessions at two hours.  

 

  • A two hour session means that you can drive safely in peak hour, find our car park, and be five minutes late without compromising on your experience.  It's important that you're relaxed about coming in and can concentrate on developing solutions or finding resolution rather than on the frustrations of traffic. 

 

  • That also means that you can spend fifteen minutes talking about how much you might dislike your job and then spend another fifteen remembering what you came to see me about (Maybe it's connected to your job). A two hour session gives you time to talk and be treated like a person.

 

  • It provides a chance to debrief and discuss things you may have already touched on without the oppressive sensation that you are forfeiting your session covering old ground. Therapy can be difficult, time consuming, complex, even draining.  It's especially important that you have room to pace and orient yourself, and to make sure that you get a chance to feel certain with what you're saying.

  • Two hours offers the necessary period in which to have a proper discussion about 'what has been' and 'what is' going on for you, and what you're looking to achieve.  If you've ever participated in an hour long session you're probably aware of the hinderance that such a constraint places on communication.  

  • Finally, a two hour session offers you the opportunity to participate in hypnosis, even if it's just for a short while for the sole purpose of relaxing and unwinding. 

With a two hour session you can easily and safely forget about time. That means that your attention is free to focus on you and the experience you came for.  Everybody needs a chance to get comfortable, establish trust, unpack, and feel understood, I need a chance to get comfortable, unpack, and feel understood.  I've never had anyone tell me the time took too long, in actual fact most people are surprised when I announce that time's almost up.

Hypnosis is available online for you and it works.  Many, very happy, clients were limited by location, distance, or time and still wished to receive help.  In fact meeting from the comfort of your own home can sometimes be the most effective way forward.  

  If you'd like to meet me online check that you match the following requirements:  

  •   A working computer or laptop is recommended.  Using a tablet is possible.  While it is certainly possible to video conference with your phone it is not recommend in a therapeutic setting.  

  •   Your device needs to be in working condition and fully charged.  A wall socket connection is recommended.  

  •   Headphones are not required but are recommended.  

  •   A working camera on your device, be sure to test it in advance.

  •   A well lit, quiet, comfortable place to sit, free from family, friends, pets, noise and other possible distractions.  

  •   A working, sufficiently fast, uninterruptedinternet connection.  

  •   An accessible e-mail account.

Believe it or Not  we're always on some level operating on automatic-pilot, and for good reason.  Imagine how laborious it would be if you had to -consciously- remember and then execute every detail of every action, every time that you wanted to do something.  Something as difficult as making a coffee or as simple as driving a car.

So what do I mean by always on some level, operating on, automatic-pilot?  Well... I mean that you know how to do that thing without thinking about it.  Sure, maybe you have to occasionally consider where you left your coffee mug or if there is any milk left in the fridge, but most of what you're doing you have already learned to do on auto-pilot, including 'remembering' to 'remember' to remind yourself whether there is enough milk.

 

Automatic learned behaviour ensures that we can accomplish an extraordinary number of complex tasks and engage in a multitude of sophisticated social interactions without completely melting down and burning out.  

So what does any of this have to do with hypnosis?  Well... a better description than hypnosis might be -The exclusive, voluntary, internalisation, of concentration and awareness on a single foci of attention- you might imagine a person was entranced if they were fixated on a candle flame in a darkened room.

 

In fact hypnosis has had many names including, mesmerism, fascination, mono-ideaism, auto-suggestion, somnambulism -the list goes on- and to this day professional hypnotists still enjoy debating definitions such as 'unconscious' and 'subconscious' mind and there still remains a question as to whether 'trance' or 'relaxation' are even needed.

 

The important thing to realise is that what emerges is a state of heightened suggestibility, focus, and internal resourcefulness.  The hypnotic state is a naturally-occurring state, however, it is an 

altered state compared to how you usually behave.  It is very similar in experience to day-dreaming, deep concentration, imagination, visualisation, and other perceived learning states, even meditative and therapeutic states.  

 

Neuro-scientific research has differentiated the hypnotic state as being markedly, and measurably different from those -just mentioned- specialised experiences however Hypnotists do employ processes that make use of imagination and visualisation etc..

Although medical science is uncertain as to what hypnosis is exactly (not entirely uncertain) some of it's highest paid, most respected and most specialised technicians such as Anesthesiologists are trained to administer hypnosis for pain control (for people allergic to regular anaesthetics) disease management, and recovery.

 

For the PhD. candidates who've read this far Anthony Gaile's theory of Neural Mutual Inhibition offers a promising and testable hypothesis for what may be taking place neurologically during hypnosis.

Why use hypnosis in therapy?  Well... the short answer is because in a hypnotic state, -a state of exclusive, voluntary, internalisation of concentration and awareness- you tend to perform much more effectively and much more easily when engaged in visualisation and relaxation processes and that tends to benefit therapy.  In fact properly-structured, well-executed,  and targeted hypnotic interventions are so powerful that pack-a-day smokers will quit for life with as little as an hours worth hypnotic intervention.

How does that help?   That's a good question.  Let me begin by saying that Life is challenging and because Life is challenging we sometimes get stuck.  

 

Sometimes we get stuck doing really dangerous things, in really dangerous ways, in really dangerous places.  When that happens we risk destroying everything we've worked for and depend upon, ourselves, our relationships, our environment, etc.

 

The hard part is understanding how that happens, and what we've taught ourselves to do about it.  Remember at the beginning how I said that most of what you do is automatic?  

That makes it difficult to recognise and change behaviour.  No one wants to repetitiously think about how they're making coffee and people Definitely Do Not Want To CHANGE! the particular way THEY make it.  

Well this same thing can happen when you get stuck in a difficult problem or relationship.

 

We've all had 'help' from friends who didn't know what they were doing and experimented on us with their 'advice'.  And we've all at some point continued to 'cut-a-corner' even though we knew we were taking a risk doing so.  Well that's kind of like how bad solutions take hold.  A part of us uses a bad strategy to try to change a bad solution until it becomes automatic.  Because we've got good at it we do the bad solution and the bad changing strategy a lot and that leads us to do it more quickly and effectively, more habitually. 

That's where a good therapist can help and Hypnosis is just one particularly versatile and useful tool amongst many that therapists employ to help toward finding solutions, resolution, and a more beneficial strategy moving forward.

How many sessions should I expect to need in total?  

 

Depending on the nature of your situation the number of sessions varies.  

 

You may attend until you are satisfied that you have reached your desired outcome.  A good rule of thumb is around 2-3 sessions for performance related work and around 6-7 sessions for deeply troubling personal issues. 

 

There is no minimum number of hours and you may find that you have reached a reassuring and satisfying outcome after a single meeting.  

 

Where discomfort and pain have resulted from tension surrounding an important life decision a single session could easily be all that is required to find resolution and a satisfactory path forward.  A follow up session might be useful in such circumstances to address any residual or unexpected emotional issues encountered.

Can I attend for less than two hours?

Yes.  The two hour structure is not set in stone and you can book for a longer or shorter period of time.  No sessions are scheduled for less than an hour.  

 

*Exceptions may be made where circumstances require.

How frequently will I need to attend in order to notice a change?

Depending on the nature of your situation the number of sessions varies.  

 

A loose guideline would be approximately once a week or once a fortnight.  People usually report that they notice a change beginning with the very first session.  However there is no rule that says you must notice a difference straight away.

 

 The two hour structure provides ample time to properly account for and give consideration to factors that might be contributing to your dilemma and that tends to facilitate progress. 

With regards to mental health interventions changes in your perception can result from a number of factors.  Those factors can include a sense of relief having made the commitment to secure professional outside assistance as well as from the feeling that you have taken action on a matter of personal importance to your well being.  

There is also the necessary understanding that change and subjective well being are subjective and vary with mood, attitude, and circumstance.  For people seeking assistance with their mental health there is usually a recognition that 'things' could be or have been better AND THAT it is possible that 'things' could get 'noticeably' better again with help.  Because of the subjective nature of experience, when engaged in the challenge of therapy both practitioner and client agree to a mutual 

-sometimes unspoken- trust as they navigate the various processes, encounter challenges, and change.

From a therapeutic perspective there is a lot of value in being able to discuss your situation with someone other than yourself or someone other than a person who is themselves entangled.

Further a therapist is a trained professional with relevant expertise in exactly the type of problems you are necessarily experiencing.  That means that they're properly equipped to help unpack whatever is going on for you, intervene with therapeutic processes, and assist you in finding peace and resolution.

What can I expect in session?

You can expect to be treated with consideration, with openness, and with interest.  I do my upmost to understand your position -as you see it- and to provide the assistance you require to reach your objective and find resolution and a satisfying outcome.  

 

I do not and will not promise to 'fix' you or your problem in any set period of time or with any one particular therapeutic process, nor will I guarantee a specific outcome.  In fact of matter I do not 'fix' you or 'fix' problems.  I provide a way for you to reconnect with what is necessary for you to move forward in whatever way you deem necessary where it is beneficial to your overall health and well being.

I do not give advice.

To establish any guarantee or certainty of outcome would be irresponsible on my behalf and potentially damaging to you should those expectations fail to be met.

Therapy is a do with experience, not a do to process.

What should you expect of your experience with me?

You should expect any type of therapeutic mental health intervention to be challenging at some level in some way.  Like most things in life, 'change' -even at the psychological level- requires commitment and effort.  Just as is the case with exercise to improve your strength and flexibility, or education to improve your thinking and utility, therapy is a process of challenging limiting beliefs and stuck emotional states in order to build positive capability and resilience. 

 

With that end in mind therapists may assign tasking that requires a further commitment outside of the sessions (Tasking is generally designed as a personal challenge and is generally speaking not financial or financially significant - tasking may take the form of a 'journal' or a 'daily walk', etc). The purpose of tasking should it be assigned is to increase the challenge where or when necessary with the intention of stimulating growth that would proceed a positive change. 

Should you decide at any point that the process is not working for you, you are free to leave however I would expect that you might  mention such feelings should they arise so that the purpose of a process may be explained and or the feelings may be acknowledged and addressed.  Exploring your limitations and fears can be challenging, but not exploring them can be devastating.

How much are your services?

 

Ordinarily I bill a standard rate of $120.00 an hour for my time. However the first introductory session is set at a discounted rate of $120.oo for the full two hours.  I also offer sessions at a discounted rate in cases where financial hardship is a barrier to receiving help, this offer extends to students, and unemployed persons.

What payment types do you accept?

 

You can make payment by cash or card at the studio after the session or online.  Alternatively I can e-mail you a bill.  All card payments are via the Paypal Merchant Service.
